Theology On Tap:

P.W.S. & D. Helps In Gaza:

By Stephanie Chunoo

In the year since the start of the current war in Gaza, tens of thousands have been killed or injured. Around 86% of the Gaza Strip has come under evacuation orders since October 7. This population movement has meant overcrowding, lack of proper shelter, poor water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) conditions, all of which have had grave impact on public health. The World Health Organization estimates that only 16 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza are partially functioning, and just 44% of primary health care facilities are operational.

Humanitarian efforts are hindered by ongoing challenges including limited access and mobility, high costs for goods and challenges in moving them, and a difficult security context with limited electricity and fuel. Despite these challenges, PWS&D partners, including DSPR (the Department of Service to Palestinian Refugees, part of the Near East Council of Churches) and Catholic Relief Services (through Canadian Foodgrains Bank), continue to provide food, health care, and psychological assistance to as many people as possible.

Presbyterian Prayer Partnership this week:

Friday, November 15: We pray for the Sabeel Liberation Theology Center as it hosts the “Challenging Religious Extremism” conference in Bethlehem and Jerusalem amid rising intolerance and violence in the Middle East.

Saturday, November 16: We pray for Atlantic Mission Society groups as they encourage congregations to support the Advent gift projects.

Sunday, November 17: (Legacy Giving Sunday.) We pray for all the people in congregations who leave a legacy gift—a bequest, a charitable gift annuity, a gift of life insurance—so that we may have vibrant ministry, today and tomorrow.

Monday, November 18: (Restorative Justice Week, Nov. 17-23.) We give thanks for the Church Council on Justice and Corrections, and its work to support healing for people and communities harmed by crime, fear and system injustices.

Tuesday, November 19: We pray for those who lack access to proper sanitation and for P.W.S. & D. programs that are working to provide water, sanitation and hygiene measures.

Wednesday, November 20: (Trans Day of Remembrance.) We remember those who have died because of transphobic violence. We lament the church’s role in contributing to prejudice and hatred of transgender people and commit to working for a future where trans people can flourish.

Thursday, November 21: We pray for chaplains in hospitals and long-term care homes as they continue to provide comfort, offer hope, and minister during moments that matter.

Heartwarming content is only a click away.

I think you might agree with me that there is not a lot of content on the TV news, or on the web that you could file as “uplifting”. May I point you to some that is? KVVU-TV in Las Vegas, Nevada, has something unique. They call it “The Fox 5 Surprise Squad”. A group of station employees go around giving money, groceries or other help to people that are facing major challenges in life. I found out about this after I saw a segment on the web about a low-wage restaurant employee who was given a car and some cash to help her, when her husband was stricken with major cancer, and was being treated in California. Google: YouTube, Fox Five Surprise Squad. One thing: you may want to have some tissues handy, if you watch.

MISSION CAPSULE: Today is Presbyterians Sharing …Sunday – a day to celebrate the mission and ministry we do together. Gifts to Presbyterians Sharing … support a wide range of mission and ministry in Canada and around the world. Through these gifts, we build strong congregations, serve vulnerable people, walk with indigenous people, seek justice and share God’s love around the world. Together, we provide hospitality for people who are homeless and help those involved in the sex trade reclaim their lives. We help congregations discover new and unique ways of renewing their ministry and provide many resources for congregations to use in worship and study. We help translate the Bible in indigenous languages in Taiwan and bring hope and love to prisoners in Malawi. And so much more! When we put our gifts in God’s hands, God does remarkable things.

MISSION CAPSULE: In Malawi, the Mabiri Community Day Secondary School’s Sexual Reproductive Health Club is a component of the Every Girl Empowered Project, which is supported by PWS&D. One of the issues discussed by club members is school dropout rates among their peers. One of the reasons for this is the inability to pay school fees. Determined to make a difference, club members identified a peer, Wezzie, age 16, struggling financially. To help her, they organized an open house event, inviting supporters to hear Wezzie’s story and learn about the importance of financial support for marginalized pupils. Through their advocacy efforts, the club secured pledges to cover her school fees, enabling her to take and pass her examinations successfully. The club was pleased knowing they successfully advocated to help improve her future.
