More from the Grandparents:

A grandmother was telling her granddaughter what he own childhood was like: "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire and it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!"

I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colours yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what colour it was. She would tell me and was always correct. If was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door, saying, "Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these yourself!"

A six year old was asked where his grandma lived. "Oh, she lives at the airport, and when we want her, we just go and get her. Then, when we are done having her visit, we take her back to the airport."

Have a blessed week. MB

GRAND KIDS!!

She was in the bathroom, putting on her makeup, under the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter, as she had done many times before. After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, "But Gramma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper goodbye!" I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper goodbye.

My young grandson called the other day to wish me a Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was and I told him 62. He was quiet for a moment and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?"

After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more ranbunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three year old say, with a trembling voice. "Who was THAT?"

MISSION CAPSULES: Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing ... connect congregations and individuals with long-term mission partners around the world, through mission visits organized by The Presbyterian Church in Canada's Mission Interpretation program. These trips allow participants to gain first-hand mission experience and build deeper connections with our mission partners. Jay Brenzil writes of his experience in Guatemala, "I always thought that "doing mission" meant doing work projects. I have learned that mission is not about doing work for others, but about working with others: forming relationships and bettering ourselves." Let us pray for Mission Interpretation staff and for congregations who participate in mission visits that encourage and support our mission partners.

MISSION CAPSULES: Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing ... support the Ecumenical Chaplaincy at the University of Toronto. Heather Paton, a student at Knox College, who volunteers with the chaplaincy, says that life for students can be very stressful and overwhelming. "People may not have friendships and they can be isolated from their home congregations. They need to find a place to connect in terms of their spiritual life and their faith. I think the chaplaincy provided a good starting point for that - it can connect people with different opportunities for worship and faith community." Chaplain Ralph Wushke says, "This is an important ministry and an important opportunity for national churchs to be in ministry with students who either are the church today or to some degree can still become the church today as they seek out their spiritual paths." Let us pray for the Ecumenical Chaplaincy at U of T and for the thirteen other University chaplaincies supported by Presbyterians Sharing.

MISSION CAPSULES: Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing ... support new ministries across Canada, including Trinity Presbyterian Church in Winnipeg. While the congregation waits for a permanent home, services are held at a local movie theatre. The theatre is an excellent land mark and is just down the street from the property that awaits a church building. Sheila, a member of Trinity, writes; "I feel God's spirit here in fresh exciting ways. I'm looking forward to sharing the challenge and growing with this congregation." Let us pray for Trinity Presbyterian Church as it moves towards having a church building of it's own.

Several people have asked me to include the following again this year.

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

- The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

- Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

- Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.

- The four calling birds were the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

- The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the old testament.

- The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

- Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit - Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership and Mercy.

- The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

- Nine ladies dancing the the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit - Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentlemess and Self Control.

- The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.

- The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

- The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

Merry - Twelve Days of - Christmas, everyone!

AND FROM THE CHILDREN ON THE SUBJECT OF LOVE!

Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK - Danny, age 7.

Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that.
They look gross when they kiss! - Emily, age 8.

Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen! Bobby, age 7.

Have a great "Christmas" holiday - there will not be a Tid Bits next week or the week after.

"NICE STUFF"

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of four to eight year olds, "What does love mean?" The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined.

- When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love. Rebecca - age 8

- When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth. Billy - age 4.

- Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other! Karl - age 5

MISSION CAPSULES - Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing ... support the Rev. Dr. David Pandy-Szekeres as he works with the Reformed Church of the Sub-Carpathian Ukraine (RCCU) as Supervisor of External Missions and Director of Schools. Over the past year, the economic crunch has had a very negative impact on the operation of the four RCCU secondary schools. A lack of funding and a rise in energy and utilities costs meant that student fees were increased by 67% at a time when families were facing heightened uncertainty with respect to employment (or not working at all). Due to a high inflation rate, job losses and rising costs for food, family incomes are generally not sufficient to meet basic needs. Let us pray for David as he works to find funding to keep these schools operating during very difficult economic times, and for people in Ukraine who are struggling to make ends meet.

MISSION CAPSULES: Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing ... support Hamilton Inner City Outreach Ministry at St. David's Presbyterian Church in Hamilton, Ontario. This ministry reaches out to children, youth and families in need in Hamilton's downtown core. It is a safe space where kids can feel like they are part of a community, share a meal together (for some, their only meal of the day), and find someone who will listen to them. Let us pray for this vital ministry as it provides hope for a better future to those who otherwise would be living without hope.

There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying "Have you heard the latest dumb stunt the United States has done? They have sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the Tsunami victims. What do they intend to do, bomb them?"

A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: "Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3000 people three meals a day; they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?"

Educating mothers for healthy pregnancies and babies is a primary task in Denise's work, and for the past year she has had the opportunity to "practice what she preaches" with her own son, Jeremy Alexander. More Good Answers:

Robert Whiting, an elderly Canadian gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on bag. "You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs office asked.

Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously. The official replied " then you should know enough to have your passport ready".

The Canadian said, "The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it".

"Impossible. Canadians always have to show passports on arrival in France."

The Canadian senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained, "Well, when I came ashore on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I coudn't find a single Frenchman to show a passport to".

"GOOD ANSWERS"

In France, at a fairly large conference, Steven Harper was asked by a French cabinet minister if Canadian involvement in Afghanistan was just an example of "empire building".

He answered by saying, "Over the years, Canada has sent many of it's fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return."

...

A Canadian Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the Canadian, U.S. English, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, "whereas Europeans learn many languages, North Americans generally learn only English." He then asked, "Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?"

Without hesitating, the Canadian Admiral replied, "maybe it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German!"

MISSION CAPSULE: Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing ... support University Presbyterian Church, located in the Jane-Finch community of north-western Toronto. It is a very diverse neighbourhood, with one of the highest proportions of youth, sole-supported families, refugees, immigrants and public housing tenants of any community in Toronto. UPC's Mission Group has developed a "Reaching Up" ministry that provides free academic and art programs for school-aged children each day of the week. The ministry consists of a homework centre, music school, and youth mentoring program. Rev. Thomas Kim says that "University Presbyterian Church has become a "good news community" where members and friends worship God, encourage one another, grow in Christ's image and share the good news with Christian love". The congregation is growing so much that a second service was added in April. Let us pray for the vibrant and exciting ministry at University Presbyterian Church.

PWS&D INFORMATION:

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between Presbyterians Sharing and PWS&D? Presbyterian World Service and Development is the official development and relief agency of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. The work of PWS&D includes responding to emergency situations, long-term community development with international partners working in health, education, agriculture and income-generation and refugee sponsorship by Canadian congregations. PWS&D is also responsible for educating Canadian Presbyterians about global needs and issues and supports churches and organizations seeking to transform their communities by promoting justice, peace and the integrity of creation. PWS&D supports people and communities in Africa, Asia, Central America and Eastern Europe according to their need and regardless of their faith.

It was decided upon formation, that PWS&D be financially separate from the other agencies of the church. PWS&D receives its funding directly from the Presbyterian constituency across the country, donations from individuals and from congregations, as well as from the Canadian International Development Agency. PWS&D does not receive funding from donations to Presbyterians Sharing ... therefore, congregations are encouraged to have a separate line on their donation envelopes for PWS&D.

TUESDAY, JULY 14TH, 2009 - Today is the 40th anniversary of the moon landing! Where were you?

WEDNESDAY, JULY 15th, 2009 - Join us for Sunday's on Wednesday worship service; 7:00 - Rev. Matt McKay leading.

BEACHES HISTORY: During Drew Stricklands time at Beaches, he contacted a friend of his, who is also a Presbyterian minister and a part-time carpenter, and whose name I no longer remember, to build a cross to hang in the sanctuary. During a visit to Beaches he found a broken pew in the old gym and noted that "there is a cross in here". He took the pew with him and delivered the cross at a later time. So, the cross in our sanctuary has always been a part of our sanctuary.

MISSION CAPSULE: Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing ... help Rev. Joanne Kim and North Peace Territorial Ministry provide outreach to many communities in the North Peace region of Alberta, an area of approximately 47,000 square kilometres. Rev. Kim conducts two services every Sunday, travelling around 120 KLm's. The ministry is made up of Strang Presbyterian Church in Dixonville ( the northernmost Presbyterian Church in Canada!) and the North Peace Korean Ministry in Peace River. On the surface, the two congregations are quite different - Strang is an aging congregation in a farming community, while the Korean congregation is made up of young business people and professionals. Yet both congregations seek to serve and love God and others, and are grateful for God's grace and faithfulness. Let us pray for NPTM as it reaches out in God's love to serve people in Peace River.
